The Cat-Eye is a look that is classic, and it's the go-to look for almost any occasion. It's great for a night out, a special event, or even just to jazz-up a regular day! As popular and gorgeous this look is, it's also tricky to achieve at times. I think we have all experienced the disaster of creating a mess of liquid eyeliner on our eyes. I like to call that the 'Bad Panda Effect!' While no two cat-eye looks are the same, I feel the need to stress that we shouldn't worry about creating a perfectly symmetrical look. Let's just get the skill down to a science. Please don't hate me when I say this, but drawing a cat-eye is actually a lot simpler than most girls (and guys too) think! The keys are technique, and patience. Every makeup artist and afficionado might have their own technique, I want to show you what works for me.
The photo above displays a step by step process on how to create this look. Now allow me to walk you through it, because that's what good gals do! We help one another.
- Start off by priming your eyes with a face or eye primer. This helps to hold your look for the whole day, and keep it looking freshly done. Let the primer sit for about a minute before continuing.
- If you are going to wear eyeshadow with your look, now is the best time to apply/blend it.
- Make sure you are going to use a liquid eyeliner, and not your classic kohl pencil liner. The pointier the felt tip, the sharper the cat eye will come out.
Later in the post I will suggest some of my favorite liquid liners.
- Start close to the lash line. I like to go from the inner corner of my eye and work my way out. With your liner, draw a basic line across your lash line, as displayed in the top photo. Don't worry if it's a bit messy, you will polish the look later on.
- Now is the tricky part which requires that patience I was talking about, along with a fairly steady hand. Keep in mind the kind of cat eye you want, and how much you want it to extend. At the corner part of your outer eye draw a slightly diagonal line going outward. Then you're going to connect it back to your lash line in a triangle, as seen in the second photo in the display. Again, it might not look great at first (mine looks fairly questionable, haha), however you're going to polish this look in the end.
- Complete this step on the other eye as well, then you will begin to pull the look together.
- Once you have your 'wings', fill them in with your liquid liner, and then go back to your lash line to thicken your liner, and/or fix your wings, as seen in the final photos.
- Top with mascara. Take a step back and look in the mirror. Make sure your cat eyes are as even as they can be. Remember, don't worry about perfection, just worry about having a nice overall look.
Here's another diagram which I think better displays how to create a cat eye. I did not create this look, so I do not take credit for it. I found this on Instagram. I hope these two diagrams are helpful.
There are an abundance of liquid eye liners available in the wonderful world of cosmetics. The key is finding one you love. I have a few favorites, all ranging in prices.
- The first one you see is by Ruby Kisses. This liquid liner is actually very affordable and easy to find! It's only $2.99, and can be found at any beauty supply store or discount store where Ruby Kisses cosmetics are sold. I have been using their liquid liners for years and they are absolutely wonderful. Ruby Kisses liner doesn't smudge, and has a great felt precision tip.
- The next one is by BH Cosmetics. This is a pen-style liner which is super easy to work with, and a bit more precise. I love this eye liner and it's only $3.99! You can find it at www.bhcosmetics.com .
- The last one in the photo is by Cynthia Rowley. The famous designer released her new cosmetic collection at the beginning of this year. I was lucky to score this baby in my February Birchbox. As I mentioned to my Instagram Followers, this liner is like a smooth writing calligraphy pen for the eyes. I don't know how much it costs, and it's probably better that I don't know! Because it's not under $10 for sure! You can find it at any Sephora, Ulta Beauty, or major department store makeup counters.
- Not pictured is a liquid liner by AVON Cosmetics called Extra Lasting Lquid liner. This liner is what I like to call my stealth liner. It literally stays on all day. It's waterproof and cry proof! It's approximately $7. You can find it at www.avon.com, or contact me directly if you're interested in ordering it.
Nothing suits winged liner more than a beautiful red lip. However, sometimes girls may think red won't flatter their skin tone. The truth is there is a shade of red for every gorgeous complexion. I want to help break down which red is best suitable for every skin tone. There are thousands of red lipsticks/glosses available, so it can be overwhelming at times to peruse every shade and brand. If you know what type(s) of red work for you, then you're off to a great start. Below are just a few examples along with some swatches from my own collection.
-The lipstick on the far left (1) is called 'Mango' By BH Cosmetics. It's a very orangey-red, meaning is has orange undertones in it. It's not a classic red by any means. This makes it great for all FAIR, and TAN, OLIVE skin tones. Mango has no shimmer to it. Upon application it's shiny, then it settles to a semi-matte. It's not heavily pigmented, therefore you can layer the color. It is also very moisturizing.
- Next to that lipstick is number 2, 'Adora' by Kat Von D. It's a beautiful shimmery red with coral undertones. Again this shade is perfect for TAN, OLIVE, and FAIR complexions. It is also a gorgeous color for ladies with DARKER skin.
- The next lipstick is probably the most famous red on the planet! (3) 'RiRi Woo' By Rihanna for MAC.It's the ultimate classic matte red. This shade looks best on those with FAIR skin. It's that great POP of color that will brighten up and define light skin tones. It also looks gorgeous on girls with a slight-OLIVE complexion.
- The following lipstick (4) is a great and affordable alternative to RiRi Woo. It's also a classic matte red that is just about a shade brighter. This red is by Wet n Wild and it is called 'Red Velvet'. This color suits all the same tones mentioned previously.
- 'Berry Berry Nice' By AVON (5) is a shiny red with pink undertones. It's a tricky shade to wear, unless your skin is more on the FAIR side.
- The final lipstick is also by AVON and is called 'Eternal Flame' from their Extra Lasting Collection (6). It is the darkest red out of all the ones I have shared with you, with blue-ish undertones. It is in the cooler side, hence the blue undertones. It has a slight shine to it, and looks lovely in very FAIR skin, and very TAN or DARK skin as well.
So as you can see, if you're complexion is a bit on the darker side of the spectrum, reds with orange undertones and deeper reds with blue undertones work best. If you have an olive complexion, coral reds and classic reds are best suitable. And if you have fair skin, you can wear just about any red, with the exception of brownish-reds. Those will wash out your tone.
I hope this has helped to answer any puzzling questions you may have had about winged eyeliner, and red lipstick! If you have any other questions, feel free to let me know. Until next time my dears....
Stay Glam!
